Student Success at Sport Stafford Borough Awards
15th May 2018
Stafford College was once again delighted to sponsor and attend this year’s Sport Stafford Borough Awards which were held at the County Showground in Stafford on Friday 27 April. The Awards are an annual event ran by Sport Stafford Borough, an independent voluntary organisation created by Stafford Borough Council and aims to celebrate local achievements in sport within the Stafford Borough.
Students and staff from the College volunteered their skills to help support both the set-up and catering for the event. With over ten awards categories, the nominees were made up of the county’s finest talent, including our very own Public Services student and Javelin star, Rebecca Scott. Rebecca won the ‘Most Improved Sports Performer’ of the Year award for her achievements in the sport over the past year.
Rebecca, who is 18 and from Stafford, first found her interest in javelin whilst at school and fell in love with the sport straight away. She joined Cannock & Stafford Athletic Club when she was 14, and has since competed for the club in the UK Youth Development League and the Senior Midland League. On commenting on her love for the sport, Rebecca said; “It’s a wonderful feeling when a throw comes together, it's those moments that keeps you motivated to be the best.”
Rebecca had a hugely successful year in 2017, not just at club level, but also county and international level. Her achievements include winning the Senior Women’s Gold Medal at the Staffordshire AAA Championships as well as winning Gold at the U19 Staffordshire AA Schools Championships and achieving a new personal best at the U18 Championship title at the Leiria International Throws Competition in Portugal.
On being nominated for the award, Rebecca said: “To be nominated was a fantastic feeling. I felt honoured and proud to have won the Most Improved Sports Performer of The Year Award.”
Mark Kent, Curriculum Manager of Sport and Public Services at Stafford College, added: “We are incredibly proud of Rebecca’s athletic success, she has shown incredible determination and talent to secure some impressive performances, and the Stafford Borough Most Improved Performer of The Year Award is a just reward. Her hard work and dedication shown to javelin has also been transferred to her studies where Rebecca has excelled during her time on the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Public Services (Uniformed) and she now looks forward to beginning her next chapter at Staffordshire University to study Paramedic Science.”
