Student Support and Advice

Stafford College offers a more adult environment, a stepping-stone between school and university or the workplace.

That doesn’t mean you are on your own, though. Whatever support you need is here when you need it whether it’s help with your coursework, with personal issues or practicalities.

The chances are that your first source of help and advice will come from the strong friendships that you forge at college. You will also get to know your tutors and lecturers very well and the team in Additional Learning Support will provide drop-in workshops and one-to-one support to help you meet any special challenges in your course.

For other good sources of help and advice, check out the Student Council, our chaplaincy team, the confidential counselling service and the facilities provided in Student Services, such as peer mentors, Travel, UCAS, EMA and ALG

Full-Time Student

Additional Support

All full-time students have access to personal tutor support. If you need any extra help with your studies we can offer one-to-one advice and group workshops to help you achieve your aims.

If you think you need extra help because of a learning difficulty or disability please tell your tutor/lecturer or talk to a member of staff in the Additional Support Unit.

Every student on a full-time course and many of those on part-time courses will receive an initial assessment that will highlight any barriers to learning, such as dyslexia. In these circumstances you will be given individual attention at the beginning of your course to agree what support you need to succeed. The help we offer can range from extra time with tutors, to in-class support or assistance with note-taking.

For most learning difficulties and/or disabilities, we can arrange specialist support, often in collaboration with other agencies. If necessary, we can also make special arrangements for you when you take your exams.

The main campus buildings are fully DDA compliant and accessible to wheelchair users. Many of the most important directional signage around the campus already includes Braille interpretation and we have invested in the latest assistive technology as well as audio support.

If there is any other way that we can help you, please let us know.

Your Tutor

The tutorial system holds the key to the record results achieved at college. As soon as you start College, you will be allocated a personal tutor to look after your welfare, follow your progress and help with day-to-day problems.

You will have regular, one-to-one meetings with your tutor and one of the most important parts of these meetings is the opportunity to agree targets for your performance. By setting targets and reviewing progress, we can make sure that you are on-track to get the results you deserve.

Peer Mentor Scheme

The Peer Mentoring Scheme is for second year students to work as mentors, using their own experiences and skills to help and support others. Being of a similar age, peer mentors offer listening and an action-planning service for those who struggle to settle into College, or may have problems keeping to deadlines, have issues with friends and/or family. This service will be available as well as existing College support provisions.

All mentors will be fully trained, CRB checked and will provide a confidential support service.
